Key Learning Areas
The NSW Board of Studies Teaching and Education Standards (BOSTES) syllabuses state what must be taught in the six key learning areas (KLAs):
- English
- Mathematics
- Science and Technology
- Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) (incorporating History K–6 from 2015)
- Creative Arts
- Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
- Religion is also taught as a formal KLA in Catholic Schools as a “seventh” KLA
The K–6 syllabuses are designed to be taught within the Board’s recommended percentages of time for each key learning area in a typical school week.
